Main Line (Hill Country Line)
Sri Lanka's most famous and scenic railway line, running from Colombo Fort through Kandy and into the misty hill country to Badulla. This 292 km line passes through tea plantations, over the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, and past stunning mountain vistas. Built during the British colonial era starting in 1858, it remains one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.
Coastal Line
Running along Sri Lanka's stunning southwestern coastline from Colombo to Matara (and now extended to Beliatta), this 159 km line hugs the Indian Ocean for much of its journey. Pass through popular beach destinations like Hikkaduwa, Galle, and Unawatuna. The line was built in the 1890s and offers spectacular ocean views, especially at sunset.
Northern Line
Connecting Colombo to Jaffna and Kankesanthurai in the north, this 402 km line was heavily damaged during Sri Lanka's civil war and fully restored in 2014. It passes through ancient cities like Anuradhapura and the dry zone landscapes of the north. The journey offers a unique window into post-war Sri Lanka's recovery.
Batticaloa Line (Eastern Line)
Branching from the Northern Line at Maho Junction, this line runs east to Batticaloa via Polonnaruwa. The 200 km journey crosses the dry zone and passes near ancient ruins. Restored after the civil war, it provides a vital link to Sri Lanka's eastern coast.
Puttalam Line
A northwestern branch line running from Ragama Junction (near Colombo) to Puttalam via Chilaw. This 130 km line passes through fishing villages, coconut plantations, and lagoon landscapes. It serves important commercial and pilgrimage towns.
Kelani Valley Line
A suburban line running from Colombo Maradana to Avissawella, following the Kelani River valley. This 58 km commuter line serves Colombo's eastern suburbs and offers glimpses of rubber and cinnamon plantations.
Matale Line
A branch line running from Matale Junction (near Kandy) to Matale, covering 28 km through the central hills. It passes through spice gardens and the famous Aluvihare Rock Temple area.
